My Favourite Things Pt. 3

Welcome to the third installment of my favourite things. Click to read the first and second one.

I don’t know what it is about glass jars, but I just love them. They activate the collector in me. I have a small collection of vintage Crown jars (the ones pictured are my latest additions – scored at a yard sale, all for $22!) and a budding collection of Weck jars. I think I like them because of the beauty of their craftsmanship. I would also like to be very organized one day, and have this as my dream pantry. And, perhaps, because you can build terrariums in them.

I love dream catchers. I love how they look and the power they hold. I one-day hope to own a giant hand crafted dream catcher to suspend from the middle of my bedroom ceiling.

I love salt & pepper shakers. I guess I am one of those people, but I don’t even like pepper! They are another thing that activates the collector in me. I’d say I have around 20 salt & pepper shaker sets. I like how quirky they all are; each brings a little whimsy to the table. My most recent salt & pepper purchase are these guys – I love how odd they are!

I love crystals. It is amazing that something so beautiful is hiding within something so plain as a rock. The natural world is constantly astounding, and I find gemstones and crystals one of the most astounding creations. I have a friend who believes in the healing power of crystals, and she’s inspired me to learn more. Besides their power, they are simply beautiful objects. There is an artist based out of Hamilton, ON, who creates beautiful jewellery using raw rocks, minerals, and gemstones. Her company is called Rare Specimens. She is one of my favourite jewelers and I have quite a few of her pieces.

I love Rifle Paper Co. Anna Bond is an amazing artist and a very savvy business woman. She creates the most lovely illustrations and turns them into useful objects! I’ve given her cards, I use her calendar, I keep myself organized with her weekly list desk pad, and I have one of her art prints hanging in my room. Her illustration style is gorgeous and her subject matter is always cheerful. Not far from Rifle Paper Co. is my love for Quill & Fox. I’m on a roll collecting prints from her as well!

Back in the summer of 2012 I went on a road trip across Canada from Toronto to Vancouver. It opened my eyes to all the natural beauty and wonder Canada has to offer, and made me hungry for more. Whether I’m in one of Canada’s most famous National Parks (as in my photo of the Athabasca Falls) or simply lying on the grass on a perfect summer day, I feel alive in nature. It is constantly changing and always fuel for inspiration.

My Favourite Things Pt. 2

Welcome to my second of three posts on my favourite things. You can read the first one over here.

I love Anthropologie. It isn’t just a clothing store, it is a lifestyle wrapped up in a beautiful little box. I first stumbled upon it when I was 16 years old, on a trip to New York City. I was amazed – I’d never seen anything like it! It took 3 years for Anthro to come to Canada, so you can understand my frustration during that time. Needless to say, it fueled a lot of trips to New York. Now there are 3 in the city and my mom and I make an Anthro trip every couple of weeks. If my home could look and smell like Anthro, I’d be happy.

Or as I like to call it, hunting & gathering. I love to spend my time browsing craft shows, clothing stores, and independent boutiques, and rummaging around thrift shops, garage sales, and flea markets. To me, it is more than just a shopping trip. I’m a hunter/gatherer. I also keep a keen eye out for neat items that someone might be giving away for free. On my walk home one day, I found a solid wood shelf that was in perfect condition, just sitting on the sidewalk. A perfect salt & pepper shaker or trinket shelf.

I love glasses. Especially funky, out-of-the-ordinary ones, which I am happy to be seeing more and more of these days. The reason I love them is they pack such a punch; they can carry their own personality and style while still being practical and useful objects. My current favourite pair are some bright yellow square plastic frames I re-purposed from Anthropologie.

9_bohostyle_s&oimage via mariel hannah

I love the bohemian aesthetic. Draped fabrics, flowing dresses, flower head pieces, messy hair, grass stained feet – sounds perfect. I feel I was probably a hippie in my past life.

10_music_s&oimage via marlee meghan

I love music. It’s one of my passions in life. I don’t know how I could ever live without it, and I hope I will never have to. My favourite genres are folk and bluegrass, with a little electro-pop if I’m in the mood.

11_food_s&odelicious image via notions & notations of a novice cook

I love food. I really love food. A lot. Especially pasta. And garlic. I don’t really know what else to say here other than ‘food is wonderful’. I have an entire Pinterest board crammed with food, which is a torture device when I’m looking at it hungry. Never look at food photos when you’re hungry.

My Favourite Things Pt. 1

Since this is a new blog, I thought I would share some of my favourite things with you, so you can get to know me a bit better. I’ve broken it up into more than one post because, let’s be honest, I have a lot of favourite things. They are in no particular order, except which sprang to mind first.

1_terrariums_s&oimage via crown flora

I love terrariums. I guess because they are little forests in a jar. You are able to have a tiny living ecosystem sitting on your nightstand. Or your coffee table.  Or your desk. Or your dinner table. Or a window ledge. Or hanging from the ceiling.

2_dogs_s&o

I love dogs. I have lived with a dog since I was 5 years old, and have only been without a dog once, for a year and a half. That year and a half was so strange. No one to greet me at the door, no one so happy to see me they couldn’t hold in their excitement, no one to cuddle up to. But then I got Hazel (the lovely dog in the photo above). She is my dog soul mate, and is always there for me. She’s the sweetest dog around and I’m so lucky to have her! Plus, she just got groomed today, so she smells like flowers.

3_kinfolk_s&oimage via frankly esoteric

I love Kinfolk. Inside its thick matte pages are wonderful photographs, clean design, delicious recipes, beautiful clothing, and immaculate styling, all while being delightfully imperfect. It appeals to all my visual sensibilities. If I could dive in and live the rest of my life amongst their pages, I would. Not to mention their ice cream & flowers editorial, which is still the best use of flowers and ice cream that I have seen.

4_frankie)s&oimage via lucky pony

One fateful day in the fall of 2007, I walked into a Presse Internationale and found Frankie, stuffed behind some alternative fashion magazines on an awkwardly difficult shelf. I pried it out, flipped through, and immediately fell in love. It became my sweet little secret. No one I knew had ever heard of it, and I could only find it at this one small magazine shop. It became my style bible. After a year-long dry spell where I could not find a single Frankie in Toronto, I found they had switched publishers and were no longer shipping to Canada. I instantly signed up for a subscription, and have since been receiving a beautiful, funny, and glorious present in my mailbox every couple of months.

5_spring_s&oimage via the snail & the cyclops

I love spring. Who doesn’t, really? Everything is coming to life again; colours burst forth from the grey doldrums. Especially after the tremendously wicked winter we experienced this year, I am appreciating every second of spring. The perfect temperature allows me to wear all my best clothes without hiding them beneath layers and layers of down coats and sweaters. It’s time to shine again!

This concludes part 1 of my favourite things. Part 2 coming soon!
